Clearcutting #5 by Maxine Touchette
About this item
This piece, entitled Clearcutting #5, by IEC's Communication Associate and artist, Maxine Touchette, represents the clear-cutting and deforestation of acres of woodland in their home of Canada. Of the piece, Maxine said "it has been terribly difficult for me to watch the British Columbian government and RCMP, alongside greedy corporations seeking profit and oil pipelines, to tear apart the old growth forests on First Nation (Kwakiutl, Ada'itsx, and others') territories. It has been even more difficult to watch the aftermath, the death left in wake of the clear-cutting — acres upon acres of felled trees, desolation, massive forest fires, and devastation of ecosystems — while Indigenous folks, activists, land defenders, and even birders, who upheld the blockade at numerous BC creeks, dwindle in numbers due to lack of support, RCMP abuse, and arrests." Acrylic on cold press, 22.5 in x 30.5 in.
