Tjunkaya Tapaya: 'Kungkarangkalpa (Seven Sisters)'

Kungkarangkalpa means the Seven Sisters, which is an extensive creation story relating to the Pleiades constellation. The story traverses Australia taking different forms, but local women are privy to the part of the story that takes place in the Country near Ernabella. 

Tjunkaya Tapaya OAM is an Aboriginal Australian artist. She is most recognised for her batik work and is one of the best-known batik artists in Australia. Her works also include acrylic paintings, weaving, fiber sculpture, ceramics, wood carving, and printmaking.

Tapaya's work has been shown in many exhibitions in Australia, Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia. Tapaya has work in the National Gallery of Victoria, the State Library of South Australia,  the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Australia, the National Museum of Australia,  and the British Museum.

On 8 June 2020, Tapaya was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in recognition of her service to Indigenous visual arts and the community.
