Susanne Newton is the first Greens Deputy Mayor of Darebin City Council.
In the three years Susanne has been on Darebin council, Darebin became the first city in the world to declare a climate emergency, the second after Yarra to ‘Change the date’ of Australia Day, and flew the rainbow flag over the town hall until marriage equality was finally achieved.
Susanne works at the Communications Officer and Knowledge Broker for the Centre for Alochol Policy Research at La Trobe University, and is a passionate feminist, currently running WMN Feminist Book Club at Neighbourhood Books.
Last year Susanne was the only Australian chosen for the inaugaral Vital Voices Engage Fellowship for women political leaders worldwide that took her to Florence and Boston to meet and learn from female prime ministers and leaders and hone political and negotiation skills at the Harvard Kennedy School. She is also a fellow of the Melbourne School of Government Pathways to Politics for Women program.
Before running for council, Susanne was working with the United Nations in Kenya and Uganda on women's political leadership programs with UN Women.
