Shauna Toohey / PAM / Psylife Slip
About this item
PAM Director, Shauna Toohey was given a navy organic slip dress to reimagine for Mind mend.
Mind Mend: Tell us about your re-imagined Tartan piece and what inspired you.
Shauna T: There’s been so much conversation about Covid-19. Every zoom call, walk with friend etc always touched on the situation. I think we were/are all trying to process it and find our positions in the slippery times. The print is a spoof of the Pfizer logo that says Psy-Life. Psy-Life is a recurring concept for PAM, its a condition of living in an alternate reality, an enhanced version of the surrounding world. It seemed a fitting response for this project.
TMM: What creative pursuits, little rituals, or things to look forward to, helped you to keep going during lockdown?
ST: I cooked a lot more than I would usually. There was a lot of baking and pickling going on in our house. I looked forward to walks with friends. Everything got pretty basic and in the moment.
TMM: How has the lockdown affected your creative process?
ST: More zoom calls less travel. Fortunately we are still working a lot with companies and people in other cities all over the globe and the pressure to meet IRL isn’t there anymore. We meet with a few members of a company in Milan, they are all on zoom from their homes and so are we, 5km or 5000km away….
TMM: When the world opens back up, what is the first thing you would love to do?
ST: Travel. I miss friends and changing perspectives. But I think I will travel less. Go for longer and do more in bursts rather than frequent smaller trips.
TMM: How does PAM approach sustainability?
ST: In many ways. I think firstly we think carefully about what we make. Then we only make to order. The fashion industry has a terrible problem with over production and we want no part in that. Even so you do end up with canceled orders and mistakes from time to time. In recent years we have been adding up-cycled items to our collections. Here we use any leftover stock we have.
We also have an on-going special project using up-cycling to raise money and awareness for different causes. We have worked with our friends Phingerin in Tokyo to make up-cycled bags to raise money to help Koalas. We also have worked with our friends Adish in Tela vive to raise money to support Palestinians.
In addition we use 100% re-cycled nylon for our popular sherling outerwear pieces. We use organic cotton in our T-Shirts and Sweatshirts. We also make all the apparel for our A+ collection with a closed loop recycled cotton/organic cotton, pretty exciting stuff.
I think another factor to consider when trying to be sustainable is to make quality items that last. If people cherish the items then they don’t end up in landfill.
