The Longfin eel (Anguilla dieffenbachii), found only in Aotearoa and now at risk, is both a vital food source and a kaitiaki of rivers and streams. Romero entwines its dark, powerful form with kōwhaiwhai and koru motifs, reflecting taiao, whakapapa, and the resilience of life on its epic ocean-to-river journey.
A nationally recognised artist, Romero was a 2023 winner in the Keep New Zealand Beautiful Resene Nature Mural Competition, celebrated for her work connecting art, culture, and environmental storytelling. Her practice transforms native species and landscapes into striking, meaningful artworks that resonate with both beauty and purpose.
