Darren Bryant "Summerland 7"

Darren is artist and educator based on Bundjalung land in Northern NSW. Research interest that lies in the field of merging of old and new print technologies to interrogate ideas between personal and social identity, memory, and nostalgia. Darren is currently employed as Art and Design Lecturer at Southern Cross University and maintaining an exemplary practice of significant quality, recognised at both national and international levels within the field of printmaking. His work has been included in survey shows in Europe, Asia, and Australia with work in numerous national and international collections. Darren has also been the recipient of international awards including the London Print Studio Prize (UK), Printmaking Today Prize (UK), associated with The British International Mini Print Prize.
'Summerland 71', continues an ongoing interest in the interplay between identity, memory and nostalgia. Sourced from family snapshots, manipulated, and transferred to a photopolymer plate for intaglio printing. The etching is also blind embossed and folded to create optical effects and unexpected forms from the play of light and shadow. Darren often tries to question social norms connected to accepted or expected expressions of identity through nostalgic images.
