At over one metre wide, ‘Dry Creek Bed’ is a commanding statement piece.
Painted in 2020, this large-scale canvas carries both artistic and cultural significance. The work was selected for a national collaboration with Myer in 2021, marking an important milestone in Ngarrindjeri artist Emma Stenhouse’s artistic journey and expanding her reach to a national audience.
‘I remember sitting in my car in Broken Hill when the news of Connie's passing came over the radio - my heart broke for Connie, her children and for Sam, so all these years later I donate in honour of Connie’
‘Dry Creek Bed’ is a powerful and expansive work, exploring connection to Country through contemporary interpretation of traditional iconography— a visual mapping of story, memory and belonging. Stenhouse’s practice is deeply rooted in learning and cultural exchange. As an early childhood educator guided by Elders, she shares traditional Indigenous creative practices while continuing to strengthen her own connection to Ngarrindjeri heritage. Each work becomes a continuation of culture — a dialogue between artist, land and viewer.
