Aurora (2017) is a striking original work by acclaimed Australian writer and visual artist Dylin Hardcastle. It captures a moment of inner turbulence rendered as elemental force and is part of a collection inspired by the deep silence in Antarctica. Sleeping in the snow on the white continent one night, the artist was woken by the magnificently terrifying sounds of a glacier calving. Deep silence was punctuated by the sounds of ancient ice folding in on itself, violently breaking off, and dissolving into the sea. Antarctica was making herself heard. Her voice was striking and spoke to the artist on a level deeper than skin and bone.
The piece is accompanied by handwritten poetic text by the artist, blurring the boundary between visual art and literature. It speaks to their experience of being lost in Antarctica, lost in a way that isn't about physical dislocation, but rather opening the door to the unknown and surrendering to the darkness. Hardcastle writes about the shock of an impossibly black sky, that felt like a bolt of lightning from the inside. It is a sky that is as stunning as it is terrifying.
This artwork comes from the personal collection of actor Samuel Johnson, adding a rare provenance to an already significant piece. Donated for auction, it represents a unique opportunity to acquire an early and deeply personal visual work by one of Australia’s most distinctive contemporary voices, under their former name.
A singular, unrepeatable piece with literary, artistic, and cultural significance.
