About the Artist
Artist Melisah May was born in the NSW country town of Wagga Wagga in 1983, before moving around with family and settling in Newcastle, NSW in 1994. She studied a BA Illustration and BA of Fine Arts Education at the University of Newcastle before working as a freelance Illustrator and casual Art Teacher, maintaining her practice in her Newcastle-based home studio.
After a formative two years living and working in London, May returned in 2012 with an ignited passion and drive to focus on her developing practice and career as a painter. Whilst working as a teacher in various schools and TAFE, May has continued to
develop and expand her practice in painting. She has exhibited in a number local Newcastle galleries, including a solo show at Art Systems Wickham in 2018, and solo exhibitions at ‘Onwards Studio’ in Hamilton, NSW in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

A semi-finalist in the Doug Moran prize in 2019, she has moved across genres from portraiture, to still life, to a more solitary focus on the ocean and its relics. May’s style is representational, and her focuses on colour, depth and light play on the surface of water.
