1980s - Melting Clocks (Tuggeranong)
About this item
Baker: Gail Haines
I have always been passionate about all things Cake. I love researching the history of cake decorating and practising the art. The 1980s were an exciting turning point for all things cake with new ideas, concepts and products which evolved cake creation to now an edible art form. The decade saw the publication of a number of iconic cake decorating books that continue to be loved for generations. For Cake Off 2021 Decades of Cake, I decided to extend my creative boundaries having been inspired by the creations of Jill Tipping in her book ‘Iced Follies’ published in 1988. I chose to re-create Salvador Dali’s infamous painting ‘The persistence of Memory’, better known as the ‘Melting Clocks’. My choice was to emulate a copy of the original painting to show just how far cake decorating has come from its origins. The challenge to convert a Surrealist painting into an edible art form, has been daunting but fun tapping into my love of painting combined with cake decorating.
My cake is a chocolate mudcake with chocolate buttercream.
