Artist Statement: Break Open is an experimental still-life artwork that encapsulates the
climactic relief experienced by Muslims after breaking their fast whilst also illustrating their spiritual state before breakage. Ahmiyat Waqt (important time) is an expression used by parents and best describes the quiet yet meditative space we enter and encounter before breaking our fast. Through the hybridisation of concrete poetry and the sunburst motif, I deliver the whispered du’a (prayer) as travelling rays of sunlight in three distinct linguistic modes. These variations in language are further symptomatic of Western-born Muslims like myself.
