A small sculptural interpretation of the Australian Star Finch, hand-built in stoneware clay and brought to life with slip and underglazes beneath a clear gloss glaze. The piece captures the bird’s distinctive red facial mask and speckled plumage through carefully layered colour and hand-painted detail. The finch is elevated on slender metal legs and mounted on a base of native gum wood. Balancing character and observation, the work celebrates the quiet beauty of small Australian birds through a playful sculptural form.
About the Artist
Green Bird Ceramics is the practice of Brisbane–based artist Sean Gordon. Originally from Scotland and the son of a potter, his hand-built works are inspired by Australian native birds and are guided by humour, colour, and character.
Sean's work focus' on connection to birds, to place, and to the small moments found in everyday encounters with wildlife. As a queer, neurodivergent artist, he is drawn to birds for their personality, presence, and individuality, using them as a playful way to explore self-expression and emotion. Green Bird Ceramics is a growing and evolving practice, grounded in making work that feels approachable, fun, and full of life.
