I came to BOCES to improve my welding skills. I expected to be shown the basics and how to do certain tasks, however, the program taught me new and interesting techniques through art. It showed me there is much more I could do if I put my mind to it. I learned that I could express myself through metal work and different forms of art, like sculpture.

Coming into the welding program, I thought it was going to be just another welding class, but Mr. Olson and Mr. Benkleman showed us how to make art. I was surprised when Mr. Olson came to me with the idea of making a bomb, because that’s a first for a school project. Mr. Olson helped me envision a sculpture out of scrap parts. With the help of our teachers, our creativity is the limit.
