About this item
Archival inkjet print
30 x 37 cm
Lucie Loy is interested in processes of signification - how meaning is produced, deferred, and perhaps made visible (or invisible) through the image itself. Loy is drawn to materials and subjects that reference their own multiplicity, things that fold back upon their many selves: shapeshifters, spectral presences, ghosts. Slate, a metamorphic rock, embodies this condition. A surface transformed through pressure and time, carrying within it the trace of what it once was. An image of continual becoming where origin and presence exist in a kind of endless present, embodying the instability of meaning and the haunted, recursive nature of representation.
