One of our choir conductors once told us about a moment during a singing workshop in a prison. He noticed an African woman who was extremely shy and sang in a tiny, barely audible voice. He approached her and said, “Your voice is beautiful and full of nuance—don’t hesitate to sing louder.”
The woman replied, “I can’t. My voice is imprisoned too.”

A few weeks later, she had gained confidence and told him: “Thanks to you, I’ve freed my voice—it’s no longer in prison.”

For 25 years, our social programme has brought people together every week through the power of the human voice. Among the 20 singing workshops we organise, three take place at the very heart of La Monnaie; others are held in the care homes of public welfare centres and in prisons. A few years ago, the decades-long work of our social programme was honoured with an International Opera Award in the Equal Opportunities & Impact category.

Today, this initiative appeals to your generosity. As budget cuts continue, we are in danger of having to close workshops that make a real difference to vulnerable communities. With your support, starting from €8,000, we can keep a workshop open for a full year.
