About this item

This tin of 50 Wild Woodbine was produced c.1902 -1905 under the label issued by the British American Tobacco Company as succesors to W.D. & H.O Wills. British American Tobacco (BAT) was formed in 1902 as a joint venture between the UK's Imperial Tobacco Company and the American Tobacco Company to end a bitter trade war that engulfed the tobacco trade at the time. This tin pre-dates the familiar "cutter tins" that were introduced in 1905 as it was sealed only by the paper label that wrapped the tin. The original contents are complete as is the internal lift out cardboard insert that sat on top of the cigarettes. The design appears to be in green and grey only and not green, grey and brown as appears on most packets. There is a lot of discolouration due to rust leaching through the paper, but the label is largely intact apart from a split down the seam of the tin.

This is an exceptionally rare survivor
