#40 Jim Paul Grazer Bit with "Dema" Overlay
About this item
This Jim Paul–made grazer bit is a heavier, premium version of his classic grazer pattern, featuring bold hand-engraved silverwork and the distinctive “DEMA” name overlay down the cheek. Jim built and used this style extensively on his own cutting horses, valuing the bit’s balance, signal, and honest feel. Legendary horseman Don Dodge also preferred this pattern and commissioned Jim to build many similar examples as gifts, giving this design meaningful historical significance.
The overall construction parallels the well-known Jim Sr. grazer, but this version carries a stronger, weightier shank profile. The conchos are domed and deeply engraved, and the silver overlay sits cleanly against the aged steel. The mouthpiece is a functional low to moderate port favored for its clarity of signal without creating excessive bar pressure, making it a versatile option for seasoned horses.
Collectors often regard this bit as a “partner piece” to the Jim Sr.–overlaid grazer: similar lineage, distinct identity. Its combination of maker history, California-style craftsmanship, and practical usability makes it highly appealing to both collectors and working horsemen.
