Commentary: I painted this picture on high ground, overlooking Daymer Bay, in Trebetherick, North Cornwall, which is a very beautiful spot. My paintings sooner or later take on a life of their own, which generally involves trying to imitate Cezanne - and failing spectacularly! But the pleasure I get from channelling one of my heroes makes the means justify the end, if you follow me. Somebody once said that painting is something you can both lose and find yourself in. Well, isn't that reward enough, however critical you (and others!) maybe of your efforts?
