About this item

Student and embroiderer, Sunday Jones Evans worked on a blush colours organic silk sales sample for her Mind Mending.

Tartan Mind Mend: Tell us about what you do that defines being a creative to you. Sunday Jones Evans: I think just making things, whether it be embroidery or films for uni, even if there is no purpose to what I am creating… at least I am creating.

Tartan Mind Mend: What creative pursuits, little rituals, or things to look forward to, helped you to keep going during lockdown?
Sunday Jones Evans: I think listening to a lot of music was a great escape, and watching movies with my housemates was a nice ritual to keep sane.

TMM: Tell us your idea about your re-imagined Tartan piece and what inspired you.
SJE: I wanted the piece to have little pieces of embroidery all over, kind of like tattoos. I chose images and symbols that I thought were a little bit happy and made me smile.

TMM: How has the lockdown affected your creative process?
SJE: I’ve definitely learned to make do with what I have in the confines of my house, not only with embroidery, but with filmmaking as well. The restriction of being inside becomes its own place for inspiration.

TMM: When the world opens back up, what is the first thing you would love to do?
SJE: I would love to have my friends over for dinner!

TMM: You embroider such beautiful images from the world around you, from conversations with people to wildlife. How do you choose what you embroider?
SJE: I pretty much just embroider images, or symbols or words that I really love! Even if its odd and out of context, I like that it can be a little snapshot and reminder of something I found beautiful or interesting at the time.

TMM: What has been your favourite piece of embroidery so far?
SJE: My favourite piece I have embroidered was a Leonard Cohen album cover for my Uncle. We both love his music a lot.
