Tartan Mind Mend: Tell us about what you do that defines being a creative to you.
Poppy Kural: Seeing beauty in the smallest things. Finding different and new ways to make, create and mend while constantly evolving and learning.
TMM: What creative pursuits, little rituals, or things to look forward to, helped you to keep going during lockdown?
PK: I have just completed my 200hr yoga teacher training. This was such a great and rewarding way to spend my time in lockdown. It was challenging to fully immerse myself in it as I have a little person toddling around my feet at all times but when I found the moments it was beautiful practice to be placing my energy during this time.
TMM: Tell us your idea about your re-imagined Tartan piece and what inspired you.
PK: As soon as I saw the olive green silk I knew I wanted to combine that with brass wire - which I often use in my works. The combination was so earthy and deep. Reminded me of roots in the earth and I felt drawn to simply just using this. I’m always attracted to simplicity - makes me feel calm.
TMM: How has the lockdown affected your creative process?
PK: I think the collective energy at the moment is a bit dull. At the beginning of lockdown I felt so inspired and loved the slowness of being at home and having time to create. But as the weeks went on and on I felt it was harder to motivate myself creatively. That’s why taking a break and focusing on yoga instead was a good breather and helped my get my energy back, physically and creatively.
TMM: When the world opens back up, what is the first thing you would love to do?
PK: Hmm I think going to a yoga studio or taking a trip away.
TMM: Why is weaving your preferred medium to express?
PK: I love the tactile nature of weaving. It’s all in the hands. I never really plan what I’ll weave, the materials and my fingers just find a way to create something as they go. I find the repetition mediative, a nice escape.
TMM: What skills do you need to have in order to weave?
PK: Not many! Kids learn how to weave at school. That’s where I learnt - at Steiner school. Then went on to learn more at university. You can make weaving as simple or complex as you like. Either way you can create magic. I’m often drawn to the simplest weaves. Something about a thread just simply moving under and over another thread is enough for me to appreciate the beauty.
