About this item

For Tartan Mind Mend, florist Bess Scott (aka Bess Paddington) upcycled a blush coloured organic silk slip sample, magically weaving a dress into an amazing floral arrangement/light fitting.

Tartan Mind Mend: Tell us about your re-imagined Tartan piece and what inspired you.
Bess Scott: I went sculptural not wearable and thought it would be nice to incorporate flowers. All the daisies that make up my piece are dried paper daisy from my father’s farm at Mangrove Mountain. These flowers bloom in Spring so it was perfect timing to include them.

TMM: Tell us about what you do that defines being a creative to you.
BS: You can not underestimate the power of the imagination. It is a constant reminder not to worry about what people think. It makes me bold to try new things and break some rules. It is a continuous source of inspiration and helped me look beyond the context of Covid. My imagination was never in lockdown…

TMM: What creative pursuits, little rituals, or things to look forward to, helped you to keep going during lockdown?
BS: People embraced flowers in lockdown. It was a wonderful way for people to spread some love -to cheer up others around them, or even themselves! They would send flowers because they couldn’t see family or friends for birthdays, anniversaries, and sad times. The flower industry was fortunate to continue strong during the lockdown. It was a privilege to serve the community during this time.

TMM: How has the lockdown affected your creative process?
BS: The larger installations and event flowers came to an abrupt halt. However, I made lots of gorgeous fresh bouquets with the ever-changing specular Spring blooms. In addition, I had a range of interesting briefs to work with as many customers had time to think creatively about what they wanted with the shift to working from home.

TMM: When the world opens back up, what is the first thing you would love to do?
BS: I can’t wait to visit my parents flower farm. It’s the place where my imagination and creativity was nurtured and encouraged.

TMM: Your father and grandfather were both flower growers, what valuable lessons did you learn from them about your trade?
BS: To work hard. When I started the shop three years ago, Grandpa gave me some advice - have a good show in the shop every day and make sure what you sell is good quality.

TMM: What does managing waste look like currently within the florist industry?
BS: We mostly sell Australian native flowers, which I buy from my father at Flemington Market. Australian native flowers dry well, so flowers left over in the shop are dried and used for dried arrangements or other creative endeavours….and the occasional Tartan light shade.
