About this item

Designer and Artist, Annie Zawada hand painted a blush coloured organic silk tank and skirt for Mind Mend.

Tartan Mind Mend: Tell us about what you do that defines being a creative to you.
Annie Zawada: My husband Jonathan Zawada and I run a creative business, it is difficult to describe what our business is because we work on such diverse projects, both client led and self directed, from NFT's to marble furniture, music videos and jewelry design and many more different things. So everyday I am involved in making, watching, observing, discussing, selling something that began as a creative idea.

Tartan Mind Mend: What creative pursuits, little rituals, or things to look forward to, helped you to keep going during lockdown?
Annie Zawada: After the 2020 lockdown I quickly enrolled into a ceramics class at our local TAFE and enjoyed a semester of having that one morning a week to get back into hand building ceramic sculptures, which I have loved since I was a little kid. I had full intentions of continuing to work with clay things at home through lockdown 2021 but alas the home-schooling of my two little children put an end to those day dreams. I have kept my travel water colour set and notebook out in front of the TV, so even when flopped down on the sofa at night I could potentially make a sketch of an idea that I can get to in maybe 2023..? Honestly being given this project to think about has been so lovely to have a specific purpose to sketch and paint and has made me think it needs to be more of a priority.

Tartan Mind Mend: Tell us about your re-imagined Tartan piece and what inspired you.
Annie Zawada: In my ceramics I have enjoyed decorating the objects with patterns inspired by ancient history and I was inspired to continue with those themes for my Tartan pieces. I live surrounded by the colour green and I am quite obsessed with it, so green paint on salmon pink silk was all it was ever going to be!

TMM: How has the lockdown affected your creative process?
Annie Zawada: In a way it had provided me with a small opening of head space, instead of doing the school run everyday I found I had a few extra moments to pick up my paints and notebook. But in another way it removed any chance of finding a quiet time at home to work without having to accommodate my very busy and curious daughter Jean who loves to 'help me' and basically has no respect for water colour paint!

TMM: When the world opens back up, what is the first thing you would love to do?
Annie Zawada: I hope to visit my friends and family in Sydney and take Jean to Taronga Zoo, the Natural History Museum and the Aquarium.
