Emma Coulter, is an Australian artist, whose practice encompasses painting, sculpture and site-specific installation.
Working in the expanded field of painting, her practice explores the intersection of colour and space, through their democratic values, in transcending the hierarchical structures of culture, through the paradoxical nature of art.
Coulter works with colour in a serial way, through a refined colour palette; creating the artist’s own bold, idiosyncratic, spectrum. Her works are an investigation into the semantics of colour and form, and the creation of meaning and language through both spatial arrangement and colour relationships.
Recent career highlights include the award of two major public art commissions in 2022 for both Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery and for the Eighth development in Melbourne’s Art precinct. This follows her colossal ‘spatial deconstruction’ artwork that wraps over 100 metres of the Metro Tunnel’s building facade in central Melbourne.
‘Mixed colour systems’, 2014 to 2022, is a painting first executed in 2014, during Emma’s masters study at VCA. Archived and re-found in 2022, the work was completed by the artist, and the title references both ‘old colours’ and ‘new colour systems’ compiled in the one painting.
This work is a unique work of the artists.
