Ruth Frost’s art practice spans the disciplines of photography, video and sound –
exploring personal memory and the potential of the photograph to act as poetic
metaphor for hidden memories of place.
The photographs produced for Place of Residence were the result of a collaboration with National Trust Tasmania that allowed her access to their numerous properties.
Her aim was to explore the capacity of the photograph to interpret these important historical residences in ways that alluded to an ephemeral human presence. In essence the subject was outside the frame.
Ruth studied at the Tasmanian School of Art, University of Tasmania, completing her
MFA in Photography in 1987. Between 1989 and 1995 Ruth lectured in the Photomedia
Workshop at the Canberra School of Art, ANU, before returning to Tasmania. She
received her PhD from the University of Tasmania in 2003, where she lectured in
photography until 2017. She currently lives in Swansea, running a small wine bar/gallery
that doubles as a Camera Obscura on sunny days.
