Rarely inviting at first glance, the tokoriro — Auckland Tree Wētā — reveals unexpected beauty in this work. Though cousin to “the God of Ugly Things,” its pointy, sharp, alien, shelly exterior is reimagined through the softness of fibres and threads, inviting the viewer to see this extraordinary native insect in a new light and appreciation.
Kendra Stoner brings rich experience as both a fibre artist and arts educator. Based in Oratia, she serves as a Learning Specialist at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, leading major creative programmes and designing inclusive art experiences for diverse audiences. Her practice draws on a multidisciplinary background and a deep belief in the power of art to connect people with their environment, infusing her fibre work with thoughtful engagement and narrative depth.
