About this item

Kate's mixed media painting pays homage to Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with urushi lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver or platinum. As a philosophy it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.

Medium: Mixed Media

Dimensions: 40cm x 40cm

About the artist

Kate Shelton is a graduate of the Australian National University, School of Art. Kate studied painting, photo media and print-making. She has been a guest artist and artist in residence and has exhibited in regional and metropolitan galleries.

She established the Ellimatta Gallery in Balmain, where then-Premier Neville Wran opened a multicultural exhibition in 1983.

At her Benedict House studio and gallery in Queanbeyan she exhibited her own work including the ‘Doors of Queanbeyan’ photography series. Here she established an award winning venue, collaborating with local artists and community groups to host arts festivals, workshops, performance and fashion and design events.

Shelton works with oils, watercolours, found objects and mixed media, in still life and landscape genres. Themes of domesticity, routine, ordinariness, simplicity, nearness and naturalness underlay her work.
