Hawksbill Turtle
About this item
Hawksbill Turtles are named for their narrow, pointed beak. They also have a distinct pattern of overlapping scales on their shells that forma serrated-look on the edges. It is this uniquely sharped shell that make the Hawksbill a commonly hunted reptile. These coloured and patterned shells make them highly-valuable and commonly sold as 'tortoiseshell' in markets. Sea turtles are the living representatives of a group of retiles that has existed on Earth and travelled our seas for the last 100 million years.
Remaining in the wild: unknown.
This papier-mâché art piece was carefully crafted by Silk Laundry Brisbane Store Manger Carla Binotto, using recycled paper from old Silk Laundry magazines and chicken wire.
When Katie Kolodinski came up with the Endangered Species capsule she wanted to spread awareness about some of the critically endangered animals and plants living in our ecosystem. With these pieces, we want to raise awareness that the loss of a species also points to bigger issues within our interconnected ecosystems. By purchasing this item, understand that 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Fauna and Flora International, a charity dedicated to saving endangered wildlife.
