Deborah Malor trained in graphic art in the 1960s, then worked with maps, archives, satellite imagery and photographs as well as with clerks, collectors, writers, ecologists, designers, historians and students. In a recent return to art-making, her work is concerned with how a site is traced, annotated and pictured through time and retrieved from memory; and how a vast ecology can be understood through close observation of its smallest parts. Materials are integral to this exploration, particularly inks made from site-derived plant material, water, wood, and minerals. Works quietly critiques acts of colonisation and environmental mismanagement, and recall the ordered files and atlases used to validate invasion and invasive practices. Since 2000 Deborah has shown work in exhibitions at UTAS (Inveresk and Hobart) and members shows at Sawtooth ARI (Launceston) and CAT (Hobart). She participated in The Marathon Project (2015-2017) and in scoping a similar arts project at Waterton Hall. She exhibited in a two-person show (with Vicki Tolman) at Sawtooth ARI in 2018 and has had solo shows at s.p.a.c.e. Gallery, SOC (2020) and Sawtooth Space (2021).
