Michael Graeve - Five stripes (G+H)

This series of 'Five Stripes' has developed out of my larger 'Sequence and Simultaneity' works, playing with multiple oscillations of colour and space perception, as well as imprinting faint echoes from one work to other works in the series. In this particular pair, each panel is left just ever-so-slightly incomplete (though not that one would know), but by placing these works at a distance from each other, even in separate rooms, I allow the viewer to transcribe their colour memories from one work to the other, completing the works in their eye's mind.

Michael Graeve is a Castlemaine-based visual and sound artist and is privileged to be the program manager of this very MFA Coursework program at RMIT, students of whom will benefit from this auction.

Working from easel painting through installation to sound performance, he engages painting and sound art practices in dialogue, extending frameworks for their creation and reading, and creating oscillations of conjunctive and disjunctive relations. He exhibits and performs internationally and has held over 30 solo exhibitions. His work features in curated exhibitions surveying non-objective, concrete and abstract painting as well as sound art, both in Australia and across Europe, Asia and the US. His work has been reviewed in Artforum International, Eyeline, Real Time and Art/Text as well as in books by Ros Bandt and Caleb Kelly. He is a senior lecturer at RMIT University and holds a PhD. He was a Samstag scholar studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and has been awarded residencies in Vienna and New York. Committed to artist-run culture, Michael was a board member of Liquid Architecture Sound Inc from 2007 to 2021, and was previously a board member and program manager at West Space Inc and a founding committee member of Grey Area Art Space Inc.
