This work is created by the process of hand crafting objects which are then replicated through mould-making and resin casting. The form suggests a miniature frame that sits ambiguously between figuration and abstraction. This is the empty and the complete, and the industrial and bespoke, together in one. Nicholas Bastin is a Melbourne artist who makes objects that articulate an envisioned connection of real world spaces with the 3.75 inch action figure and its associated environments, to create miniature liminal spaces of in between worlds. He investigates the transformative nature of material to reinvigorate the quotidian into something more permanent, to allow for both a utilitarian and contemplative encounter with object. He has lectured at the School of Art & Design, Monash University and Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney, and he is currently a lecturer in the School of Art at RMIT University, where he completed a PhD in 2011. He has participated in numerous exhibitions in Australia and internationally, and has work in both public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, and the National Gallery of Victoria.
