Sam Mertens is a silversmith and jeweller working in Melbourne, Australia. After receiving a Silver Society Hollowware grant, he graduated with Honours in gold and silversmithing from ANU school of Art, Australian National University, Canberra in 2007. He has participated in many group exhibitions since 2006 in Australia, Germany and Japan, including being selected for 2014 and 2016 Itami International Craft exhibition Shuki-Shuhaidai Sakeware. Mertens has previously undertaken mentorship with Susan Cohn in Workshop 3000, Melbourne. In his recent work Mertens explores notions of humour in his work, testing the potential of dialogue with the work.
