About this item

Design by Carleah Flinders assisted by Jess Fatnowna

It is important in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture that there is a symbol on a spiritual level providing a deeper connectivity to their clan, their traditional country, and the Dreaming. The connection to country is woven into their being, you speak to country, sing, worry and long for country – it is fundamental to identity. Our Aspire to be Deadly Mentors – Carleah and Jess through their design – looked to provide a connection with those in our community who have an interest, a passion for officiating – for umpiring the game and the shirt design on the sleeves and shoulder reflects the advancement of the umpiring through the years across the Cairns region, while the black and white markings down the side of the shirt recognise the umpires role to officiate the rules while respecting the game as a whole represented in yellow.  This has been a deeply moving experience for the whole of the Aspire to be Deadly Team.

All money raised will be applied towards the design and construction of an entrance structure at Cairns Hockey that welcomes and celebrates everyone from all cultures, all abilities and will highlight culture of the traditional owners.
