About this item

Neville McArthur was born at Mitutu (Point Lillian) a rockhole in the Spinifex Country, on the Connie Sue Highway, South of Warburton. However, it was previously noted he was born at Tutana another rockhole in the Spinifex Country South of Warburton. His niece Lalla West confirmed that this was incorrect. He has lived most of his life between Leonora (as a horseman and stockman), Mount Margaret, Patjarr and Warburton but now resides in Wanarn. Neville paints tjukurrpa from his homeland in Spinifex Country such as Wilpina (Lake Baker, South-West of Warburton) and Malu Tjukurrpa. He couldn't tell any details about Wilpina - it's a strong and sacred Tjukurrpa. Neville has had a long career as an artist working with the Spinifex Arts Project, Warburton Art Project, Kayili Artists and since moving to Wanarn in 2010, working with Warakurna Artists. He is also recognised for his skillfull carving of traditional mens' weaponry.

Since 2014, artists have been experimenting with ideas and designs through the Ngurra Streetwear Project. The focus every year is to create print-ready designs, which utilise fashion as a canvas to express self, Ngaanyatjarra culture and life in a remote community. In addition to having the opportunity to see their works immortalised on streetwear, artists learn hands on skills in graphic design, layout, and merchandising. The Streetwear Project works with artists of all ages, including the artists at Wanarn Aged Care via the Painting Therapy Program run once a week. This design was featured on t-shirts in 2017 as a back-print edition.

The Ngurra Streetwear Project was initiated in 2014 in response to artists and directors request to design fashion within the community. Working with graphic designer, Jack Searls, each year we host a week-long intensive design workshop to create aesthetic elements that are new and original. Participants use paint, textas and photography to create a host of imagery from around the community, which are then workshopped to create the best images for screen printing as well as creating a design direction for the overall project.

The workshops include photography, collage and digital manipulation using design software. Participants then made the final designs print ready and worked out costing, sizes and market development.
