About this item

Joy Jackson is an emerging artist originally from Tjukurla and now based in Kaltukatjarra (Docker River). Joy exhibited in the Revealed exhibition in 2019 at Fremantle Art Centre to affirm herself as an emerging artist. Joy was born in Warburton in Western Australia and grew up in Papulankutja (Blackstone) having attended boarding school and visiting her family as she could. Joy spent time around her mother's home of Warakuna but raised her family in Kaltukatjara (Docker River) with her husband.

Joy paints Tali Tjukurpa (Sand Hill Dreaming) from the country around the homes she has had across the Ngaanyatjarra lands. The tali are recognised as the continuous, triangular lines depicting the waves in the sand and rows of hills. The dotting in the painting is the young women traversing around the country near Kaltukarjara (Docker River) with the older ladies collecting food and resources. The painting reflects Joy's memories of learning from the older ladies collecting special grasses and flowers and other types of bush tucker.
