Artist’s Statement:

In late May, the snow had melted from most of the mountain tops, leaving only hints of pink flickering in the sunlight at the peaks and soft baby blue in the shade. The cities below were sweltering in an early heatwave, so we escaped to the mountains to stay with Martijn Doolaard and Ela at their cabins.

I’ve dreamed of painting these mountains for years. After two days of helping with heavy lifting and pouring concrete, I finally found the time to paint, setting up my studio under the shade of the birch trees with the cool mountain breeze, hoping to capture the last remnants of snow on the peaks.

Martijn, a familiar face from his popular YouTube channel, was incredibly kind and welcoming. He offered to move his iconic trailer (a staple in his videos, hauling lumber, gravel and dirt up the precarious mountain road) to clear the space for me. But I chose to paint right where we stood, surrounded by the raw beauty of the Alps.

This piece was completed in a single sitting, en plein air.
