Charcoal and pastel on elephant dung paper

21 x 29.7 cm

This work is influenced by my upbringing in Sri Lanka and many cherished memories of attending weddings of friends and family. The bride wears Sri Lankan Kandyan wedding attire although I have deliberately changed the necklaces to be somewhat non-traditional as a nod to the bride's modern life whilst she wears attire of ages past. The three tier necklace is likely to have been a family heirloom passed down through many generations. The sari she wears is draped in a traditional "Osariya" style. The paper for the work used is made in Sri Lanka and as such I felt it was the appropriate surface for the subject. A wedding for me is an expression of hope and I feel the bride's expression conveys that anticipation as she looks into the future. This work is unframed.
