Melissa Smith is a Launceston based artist who primarily works with print. Her artistic practice explores aspects of the landscape, including the shifts associated with climatic changes. She is particularly drawn to remote places, where the opportunity to listen deeply to the environment provides a greater sense of understanding and awareness.
Melissa has a Bachelor of Education (Secondary Art) from the South Australian College of Advanced Education, Adelaide and a Masters of Cultural Heritage from Deakin University, Melbourne. She currently balances her art practice with her roles at Arts Tasmania as a Roving Curator and Program Officer for Public Art. Melissa is also a committee member of the Print Council of Australia.
Melissa’s work has been exhibited widely and is represented in private and public collections in Australia and overseas including the National Gallery of Australia and in Regional Galleries in New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. Melissa was recently named the inaugural winner of the national 2021 WAMA Art Prize in Victoria.
