About this item

Art Director, Mary Libro was given an organic silk slip dress to do whatever she liked with.

Tartan Mind Mend: Tell us about what you do that defines being a creative to you.
Mary Libro: Everyone is creative. I like to communicate in a visually creative way. Others may be creative with language or numbers... we just have different ways of expressing our creativity. In short - it’s not a special gift but more a way of finding what you’re good at.

TMM: What creative pursuits, little rituals, or things to look forward to, helped you to keep going during lockdown?
ML: Walks and swims with close friends. Kept me buoyant - literally. Oh and chocolate croissants :)

TMM: Tell us your idea about your re-imagined Tartan piece and what inspired you.
ML: My painting on the black slip undermines the purpose of the garment. In a very simple and naive way I am exposing what is meant to be covered. We all know what’s there but we are not allowed to show it. It’s actually illegal. So painting these three simple shapes on this beautiful black slip dress makes us remember we are all the same underneath. And it’s a great ice breaker! I love how much it makes people laugh - which is surely the key to mental well being!

TMM: How has the lockdown affected your creative process?
ML: I’ve pulled back on things a little and given myself some space. I’ve started to think about my own process more and my personal goals.

TMM: When the world opens back up, what is the first thing you would love to do?
ML: The best thing about opening up has been being able to gather with friends and family 100%

TMM: How did you get drawn into the world of Graphic Design?
ML: I didn’t study Graphic Design - I have a BA in Fine Arts. Because of this I tend to approach projects in a conceptual way. I enjoy the challenge of distilling an idea down to its essence and communicating that idea visually.

TMM: How does what you do help to express your creativity?
ML: Fortunately my work allows me to realise creative ideas and help my clients communicate in strategic and effective ways. I have long standing clients who trust what I do which allows me the freedom to express myself fully. I’m very lucky.
