About this item

Illustrator, designer and maker, Beci Orpin started with a blush coloured organic silk t-shirt and skirt set.

Tartan Mind Mend: Tell us about your re-imagined tartan piece and what inspired you.
Beci Orpin: My tartan pieces is based on the work I do in my sketchbook, and enjoying the process of experimenting in a spontaneous matter. The value and enjoyment I get from creating the pages in my sketchbook far outweigh final outcomes of finished work, so ironically I've been trying to recreate process this in finished work. Like my sketchbook, this involves different mediums and images, both drawn and found. For my Tartan pieces, I experimented with printed transfers, solid colour vinyl, flocked letters, fabric pastels and markers to create this look.

TMM: What creative pursuits, little rituals, or things to look forward to, helped you to keep going during lockdown?
BO: My day-to-day is already pretty creative, and I was lucky to remain quite busy during the lockdowns, so my rituals were more based around my home. Most nights I would light candles and incense to mark the end of the day, it felt like a small luxury. On Friday afternoons clean the house to ready it for the weekend, and again mark the end of the working week. I also spent lots of time in my garden, planting seeds etc. My garden gave me lots of psychological relief!

TMM: Your artworks have been a part of Melbourne’s landscape for a long time, tell us about a favourite artwork or collaboration from your hometown.
BO: Last year I worked with ASRC to create a merch range - it ended up being a great success. I really enjoyed that because the money raised went to a cause which I wanted to support. It's pretty satisfying to be able to support causes through my artwork.

TMM: What Melbourne things/places did you miss the most in lockdown?
BO: I missed the beach and nature a lot! Unlike Sydney, our good beaches are at least an hour away, I was sad not to be able to get a proper nature fix. Also of course eating in restaurants, and cooking for people in our house! I'm definitely making up for both of those things now.
