After a great 1973 season for Penn State, John Cappelletti won the first and only Heisman Trophy for both Penn State and coach Joe Paterno. He would also win the 1973 Maxwell and Walter Camp Awards. Cappelletti would go on to play for the Los Angeles Rams and San Diego Chargers.

Cappelletti was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1993.  On September 7, 2013, Cappelletti's #22 Penn State jersey was retired, the only number retired in any sport by the University.
