A collection of Brannavan Gnanalingam and Murdoch Stephens’ books (Sprigs, Sodden Downstream, Life and Opinions of Kartik Popat, Down from Upland, and Rat King Landlord) - Murdoch is the founder of Lawrence & Gibson, and Brannavan is a contributing editor. Their books have been shortlisted and long listed for New Zealand’s premier literary prize, and this is a collection of some their most politically and socially engaged work.

Lawrence & Gibson is a publishing collective founded in Pōneke / Wellington in 2005. It is a non-profit worker collective, and has released over 35 novels, many of which have been critical and commercial successes in New Zealand’s literary scene.

Murdoch Stephens is an author and a founding editor of publishing collective Lawrence & Gibson. His 2022 book, Down from Upland, was longlisted for the Ockham NZ Book Awards Jann Meddlicott Acorn Prize for Fiction. He has a PhD on critical theory and climate change from Massey University, and was the driving force behind the double the refugee quota campaign, which is now government policy.

Brannavan Gnanalingam is an award-winning novelist based in Pōneke of Sri Lankan-Tamil heritage. He is the author of Sprigs (winner of the Ngaio Marsh Award for Best Novel and shortlisted for the Jann Medlicott Acorn Foundation Prize for Fiction at the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards), Sodden Downstream (also shortlisted at the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards), and A Briefcase, Two Pies and a Penthouse (longlisted at the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards). He is also a former columnist for the Sunday-Star Times, and winner of a Qantas Media Award (as it was then known) as a film reviewer for The Lumière Reader. The Life and Opinions of Kartik Popat is his eighth novel.
