About this item

BY DILRUKSHI MENDIS

Acrylic on canvas

60cm x 60cm x 4cm

2024

Inspired by the three graces of Greek mythology, Dilrukshi explores the idea of three beings that give gifts to humanity. In this case, it is the earth, sun and water all required for human beings to live and flourish on our planet. It is a reminder that all these are gifts and a perfect balance is needed to sustain life. There are references to climate change and the effects it has on our planet in this work. The fluid blue lines denote the melting ice caps, as well as searing heat denoted by the flames behind the blue water figure. Mendis has taken references from art and different cultures in creating the three figures, western dress of a Victorian era, Japanese woodblock prints aka Hokusai's great wave, an Indian saree and ancient statutes.
