“My spiral work started out with my interest in engineering concepts and perspectives.”
Stuart Mortimer is renowned for his approach to woodturning – creating airy, hollow sculptures. His signature twisted hollow form is exemplified in this stunning piece. Made with laburnum wood, Stuart achieved a symmetrical vase-shaped sculpture with ten lustrous ‘twists.’ An elegant four-start finial made in Australian Blackwood tops the form, repeating the graceful curves in miniature - a masterwork in twisted hollow woodturning.
Stuart Mortimer is an award-winning woodturner who lives in Hampshire, England and demonstrates, teaches and exhibits internationally. Stuart was a career Police Inspector and is a self-taught turner starting in 1968. Winner of many National awards for his woodwork, he is an author, teacher, demonstrator, and consultant to turners and turning groups throughout the U.K., Europe, Scandinavia the U.S.A. and Australia. He is the holder of the World Record for the largest bowl turned out of one piece of wood in 1997 in the USA authenticated and certified by the Guinness book of records.
