Neil Haddon (b. Epsom, UK, 1967)

Neil Haddon is a British Australian artist who has lived in Tasmania since 1996. Before emigrating to Hobart, Haddon lived in Barcelona, Spain, for six years. His paintings draw on his experience of migration and how a migratory way of working can be applied to creative practice.
Haddon’s paintings have been included in over 100 exhibitions in Australia, Europe, the USA. These include Theatre of the World, curated by Jean-Hubert Martin at the Museum of Old and New Art and La Maison Rouge, Paris, Strange Trees at The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, and Contemporary Encounters, at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne. In addition, his work is held in significant national and international art collections, including the NGV, TMAG, Devonport Regional Gallery, The City of Whyalla Collection, The Gold Coast Art Gallery, and ArtBank, Sydney.

Back Burn (ashes), 2014

On the news each evening I see images of firefighters struggling to contain the flames of bombed out buildings and shelters in Ukraine. I was reminded of the paintings I made in 2014 of Tasmanian firefighters preparing for another season of devastating blazes. Some fires we can control, and others we cannot.
