Janet Harper, a native of Knoxville, works out of her studio, Two Pines Pottery. After receiving a BS in anthropology from the University of Tennessee, Harper completed a two-year apprenticeship with master potter Wally Smith in 1975-76. She established Stock Creek Pottery in 1977 making high-fired functional ware. Janet and Tom Harper married in 1980 and welcomed their daughter, Samma Faye in 1981 and their son, Shannon in 1984. In 1995, Harper built her current studio nestled among the trees in her back yard. There she creates functional ware and one-of-a-kind sculptural pieces. Much of her work is inspired by the nature around her studio. She hears birds and turkeys call, sees rabbits hop by, and deer graze. You might find a bunny or dog atop one of her clay boxes or a rooster carved on the side of a mug. In 2003 she co-founded Terra Madre, a group of 39 women clay artists from the region. She continued her clay education by taking classes at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts where she serves on the Board of Governors.
