#10 Unmarked Modified U.S. Cavalry Shank Bit with San Joaquin Mouthpiece

This is a beautifully made unmarked bit showing clear influence from early U.S. Cavalry shank patterns, adapted with a West Coast–style hooded San Joaquin mouthpiece. The combination is unusual and highly desirable: cavalry-inspired cheek geometry paired with a true California mouthpiece suggests it was built by a skilled maker familiar with both traditions.

The cheeks follow the sweeping, tapered lines seen on modified cavalry and transition-era spade bits, with detailed silver inlay placed in clean vertical arrays. The silverwork is hand-cut, tight, and consistent, giving this bit a distinctly California look despite the military-inspired profile.

The hooded San Joaquin mouthpiece is the standout feature: a refined, taller port (2½") with a full copper roller. This mouthpiece style remains popular with both collectors and horsemen for its balance, lift, and clear signal. The roller turns freely enough for use, though shows age consistent with the rest of the bit.

At 8¼" shank length, this bit offers moderate-to-strong leverage with a smooth, direct feel. The 5" mouth width fits most riding horses. Overall, the craftsmanship, silver inlay, and hybrid style make this a very interesting and potentially collectible piece, even without a stamp.
