About this item

This tall-port aluminum shank bit is built in the classic Buster Welch style and represents a piece of Jim Paul’s personal training history. Jim used this bit on several of the cutting horses he trained, including the legendary Skeeto. Its design reflects the type of equipment preferred by top horsemen of that era: a tall, narrow port for increased signal and respect, paired with swept-back aluminum shanks to moderate the rate of pull and create smoother communication.

The bit is a copy of the original “grazer” style shank, but modified in Jim’s shop. During that period, Jim welded the aluminum slobber bar into place to help stabilize the shanks and prevent flexing under pressure.

With an 8.5-inch swept shank, a narrow 3-inch port, and a 5.25-inch mouthpiece, this bit offers clear leverage, elevated tongue relief, and a refined feel that allows a sensitive cutting horse to stay light and correct. It is an excellent example of a trainer-used tool rather than a decorative showpiece, valued for its authenticity and its connection to real performance-horse history.

For collectors of Jim Paul tack, equipment used on proven horses holds special significance, as it reflects the practical choices of a respected horseman.
