About this item

This early Jim Paul half breed is an excellent example of his formative bit-making period, identifiable by the thinner-gauge steel, lighter overall weight, and hand-cut cheek profile. These early pieces show Jim refining the straight/post cheek style he later became well known for. The silver inlays and engraved panels are classic markers of his craftsmanship even at this earlier stage.

The half breed mouthpiece features a well-functioning cricket and a center roller housed beneath an engraved cover plate, a detail Jim frequently used on his finer bridle bits. The roller spins freely, and the mouthpiece has the looseness and balance expected of a traditionally made California-style half breed. This was built to be both beautiful and useful in the bridle horse tradition.

With its 7.75-inch cheeks, 2-inch port, and 5-inch mouth, the bit offers moderate leverage and tongue relief, making it suitable for experienced bridle horses. Its weight distribution is lighter than Jim’s later production, giving it a unique feel in the hand and under rein.

Because it represents an early chapter in Jim Paul’s development as a maker, this bit has strong collector appeal while remaining completely functional for practical use.
