About this item
36" x 27" Framed Map
New World Cartography is a collaboration between Travis Folk, a wildlife biologist, and Tony Waters, a classically trained artist. Travis is the son of a forester who produced hand-drawn maps for land management in the 1980s. It was these utilitarian land maps and Tony’s aesthetic eye that inspired them to resurrect this art of spatial information.
Maps begin as celebrations of places and themes and are informed by experiences. The process starts with hours of research that is then portrayed as ink-work on the blank page. At times, the detail requires a magnifying glass during drawing.
Coloration and development of color palettes comes from the desire to accentuate carto-graphic features with gradated organic hues.
