About Madeline Hutchinson: I am an Australian figurative painter and my work captures glimpses of contemporary, urban, and everyday life. My paintings tell a narrative and respond to the inner feelings and struggles of the modern day person, particularly those of my millennial peers. Scattered throughout my paintings are themes of spiritual searching; social media and vanity; personal and societal anxiety; and internal battles of ego, such as insecurities about what we feel we should be and how we measure up.

After graduating from the National Art School in 2007 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, I spent a number of years living in London. My time abroad opened me up to new channels of expression, both personally and artistically, and I became influenced by the vibrant streets filled with graffiti and street art, and the colourful diversity I was surrounded by in my East London home.

My paintings are charged with bold colour and my style reflects the vivid, poster-like qualities of the urban culture I am continually drawn to. I am fascinated with portraiture and representations of the human figure, especially the way they allow for social commentary and for exploration of the human experience as a whole. My hope is that through my art people might have a better view of society, cultural norms, and even of themselves.

This work will be displayed at The Vic on the Park, on Saturday February 8, at the Inner West Bushfire Relief event day 3pm-12am. Bidding closes as the event ends, so if you'd like to see it in person, come to the event! Entry by donation.
